4 Ways to Change Up Your Winged Eyeliner Look

Although not necessarily the easiest skill to master, eyeliner is arguably one of the best ways to transform a mujer’s look. If you’ve admired the artistry of other Latinas on IG or watched tutorials in amazement and wondered how it’s possible to create such flawless winged eyeliner looks, you’re not alone.

Mastering liquid eyeliner flicks like a pro takes patience and practice before creating your own fierce looks. Whether you rocked eyeliner in the ‘90s or it’s your first time trying a bold color, there are a few basic pointers to keep in mind that can help make your eyeliner as bold and beautiful as possible.

Use a Water-Resistant Eyeliner

We don’t want our eyeliner to smudge, streak, or fade when that’s not the look we’re going for. Be sure the liquid eyeliner you choose is water-resistant and long-wearing, which means even in the summer heat, it won’t smear or run. Also, the formula should be extremely opaque, so you don’t have to go over the same area multiple times with the applicator. Find a real MVP among Latina makeup brands and you won’t be disappointed.

Use the Felt Tip Applicator…Or Not

If you like the feel of the precision felt tip applicator that comes with your eyeliner, use it to your advantage to create perfectly even lines. If not, try using an eyeliner brush you’re comfortable with. Sometimes the formula may be perfect, but you don’t particularly like the applicator. This is remedied by finding a tool that works for you to create your own fierce look.

Switch Up Your Looks

If you’ve been rocking the same eyeliner look or color since high school and it works for you, more power to you, girl. But if you want to try something new, don’t be afraid to channel your inner chola makeup vibe or your Kay-Lani Martinez glamour goddess essence. That’s the beauty of makeup—you can do whatever you want! Cobalt blue has been around so long it’s considered a neutral, so if you’ve been timid to try it, this is your year.

Keep Your Eyes Open

It’s hard to keep both eyes open when applying eyeliner. The natural tendency is to close one eye. But to avoid asymmetrical, bumpy eyeliner, keep both eyes open and relaxed for the best results. Another tip is not to tug on your eyelid as you apply eyeliner. We’ve all been guilty of this one. The texture becomes bumpy when you let go of the lid. Use your fingertips as an anchor next to your lid instead.

There’s No One “Right” Way to Do It

Some of us prefer to first draw the diagonal tail end of the wing to the outer corner of the eye and then draw a second line from the tip back to the center of the lash line. This leaves a slight gap between the two lines, which is then filled in. Others prefer to start from the inner corner of the eye and draw along the top lashes and then extend to the outer corner of the eye, drawing a diagonal line at a 45-degree angle. The second line is then drawn from the end of the wing down to the middle of the lash line before filling it in. There are tons of other ways to do it too, so do what feels most natural for you in creating your 2.0 winged eyeliner look.
